In the procurement of high voltage switchgear, the choice between vacuum circuit breakers and SF6 circuit breakers has always been a focus of attention for engineering and technical personnel. Although both are circuit breakers, they differ significantly in arc extinguishing principle, applicable scenarios, maintenance costs, and other aspects.
Vacuum circuit breakers use high vacuum as the insulating and arc extinguishing medium. In a vacuum environment, there are very few gas molecules, and the arc is mainly maintained by metal vapor evaporated from the contacts. When the current passes through zero, the metal vapor rapidly diffuses and condenses, and the insulation strength recovers extremely quickly. SF6 circuit breakers utilize the excellent electronegativity of sulfur hexafluoride gas - SF6 molecules can quickly adsorb free electrons to form negative ions, significantly reducing conductivity, thereby achieving efficient arc extinguishing. The insulation strength of SF6 is about 2.5-3 times that of air.
Vacuum circuit breakers have traditionally dominated the medium voltage field (10kV~40.5kV). In recent years, China has successfully developed 126kV and 252kV high voltage vacuum circuit breakers. SF6 circuit breakers dominate the high and ultra-high voltage fields at 72.5kV and above, reaching up to 1100kV.
Vacuum circuit breaker contacts are in a sealed vacuum environment, with mechanical life up to 30,000-100,000 times. SF6 circuit breakers, because SF6 gas decomposes to produce low fluorides after each interruption, require regular replacement of adsorbents, with mechanical life generally 5,000-10,000 times.
Vacuum circuit breakers are basically maintenance-free, only requiring regular checking of contact wear. SF6 circuit breakers require regular testing of gas pressure and moisture content, replacement of adsorbents, and involve a larger maintenance workload.
SF6 is a greenhouse gas with an extremely high global warming potential (GWP), approximately 23,500 times that of CO2. Vacuum circuit breakers are completely environmentally friendly, producing no greenhouse gas emissions.
For indoor distribution at 35kV and below, vacuum circuit breakers are preferred; for 110kV and above substations, SF6 circuit breakers still dominate, but attention should be paid to environmentally friendly alternative solutions.
